Tumale John

Tumale John is aged 20. She comes from Kamvuluvulu village in Traditional Authority Kalonga in Salima district. Tumale was born without a disability. However one evening, at age 4, while returning home with her sisters, she was bitten by a snake. Her leg developed a wound which has never completely healed to date and keeps recurring. The wound made it impossible for Tumale to walk to school. She stopped school in standard one. As she grew up she was worried about her future.

So it was a big relief when KODO offered her an opportunity to learn tailoring. She started training in October 2020 and finished in March 2021. At KODO, Tumale learned how to make different garments such as skirts, dresses, safari suits, short and long trousers, and short sleeved shirts. She also learned about HIV and AIDS, organic manure production, gender awareness, reproductive health, business management, human rights and covid-19. After training she was given a sewing machine and accessories, thread, cloth, and a solar set.

She started her tailoring business in September 2021 in her home village. She also provides a phone charging service to her community using the solar set. Tumale earns an average of Mk 60,000.00 per month. From her income she moulded 2500 timber bricks and built a two roomed house. She is now married and is starting her own family. Tumale has also been able to use savings from her business to pay for land rent and labour to grow maize.

Tumale has trained two relations who help her with tailoring. In the near future Tumale plans to build a tailoring shop at a nearby trading centre to increase her market.
