Nelson Chafumira

Nelson Chafumira is 35 years old and from Dowa District. He is married and has 4 children. Nelson has a paralysed leg. He used to make and sell charcoal, making 40000mk per month. Nelson took part in the cane furniture training at KODO, graduating from training in March 2021. As well as being taught how to make good quality cane furniture, Nelson was also given training in business, reproductive health, gender awareness, HIV and AIDS prevention and organic manure production. When Nelson finished training at KODO he was provided with cane furniture tools, some materials and a solar panel. He now works together with a fellow graduate from KODO, selling cane furniture. He is now making between 150000 – 200,000mk per month from his cane furniture business. He is using his solar panel to run a barber shop, which earns him an additional 40,000mk per month. With his increased income Nelson has been able to buy bricks to build another house, 25 chickens, 7 pigs and rabbits. He is also able to save money and has been able to assist others. He is now able to hire labour to farm the family land and has been able to send his children to school and afford the school funds.

Nelson has ambition to buy more land and to build a house nearer to the main road.
