Mercy Banda is 23 years old and she lives in rural Nkhotakota with her mother and sister. Mercy is deaf. She did not used to work and was dependent on her mother for support. She took part in MACOHA’s tailoring training in Nkhotakota, graduating in March 2022. As well as tailoring, Mercy took part in business, gender awareness, reproductive health, HIV and AIDS prevention and organic manure production training. When she finished training, he was given a sewing machine, some materials and a solar panel. Mercy now runs her tailoring business outside her house and is making and selling dresses, skirts, shirts and uniforms. Whilst training was challenging for Mercy due to a lack of sign language, she managed to learn very well. The quality of Mercy’s products is very high and she is making 60,000mk per month from her business. She is supporting her mother and sister and the family have enough for day to day living. She is teaching her sister how to do tailoring and they plan to open a shop together along the main road.
