Shaiku is 35 years old, single and has one child. She has leg length discrepancy. She used to farm and would make on average 20,000mk (or £20) per month. Shaiku took part in MACOHA’s tailoring training in Nkhotakota, graduating in September 2022. As well as tailoring, Shaiku took part in business, gender awareness, reproductive health, HIV and AIDS prevention and organic manure production training. When she finished training, she was given a sewing machine, some materials and a solar panel. Shaiku started her tailoring business in a shop space she is renting in the trading centre. On average she is making 40,000mk per month from her business. She is also teaching 2 students who are paying her. With her increased income, Shaiku has been able to rent land and pay for labour to farm it. She is supporting 2 children from her village, whose parents are ill. She is able to send her child to a private school. She has also bought a fridge and can buy food for the family to be comfortable. Shaiku is producing organic manure for her farm. She is also saving money to buy more sewing machines, so she can expand her business.
