Selena Jiwawo is 30 years old and is married with 2 children. She has a condition called Monoplegia. Selena used to do farming work, making only 10,000mk (or £10) per month. She and her husband struggled to have enough money to support their family. She took part in MACOHA’s tailoring training in Ntcheu, graduating in September 2022. As well as tailoring, Selena took part in business, gender awareness, reproductive health, HIV and AIDS prevention and organic manure production training. When she finished training, she was given a sewing machine, some materials and a solar panel. Selena now runs a tailoring business outside her house and is making and selling dresses, skirts, shirts and school uniforms. She is making 50,000mk per month. She is also using her solar panel to charge phones, earning an additional 15,000mk per month. With her increased income Selena has bought bricks to build a new house and has bought a pig and chickens. The family have enough to eat and feel more secure. Selena is saving money and plans to buy another sewing machine so that she can expand her business.
